Michael Kellner

member of the German Bundestag (Alliance 90/The Greens), former parliamentary state secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (2022–2025)

Michael Kellner is a Member of the German Bundestag (Alliance 90/The Greens) representing the electoral constituency Uckermark – Barnim I since 2021. In this legislative period, he is speaker for energy policy of the parliamentary group of Alliance 90/The Greens and head of the working group for economy and energy.

From 2022 till the election 2025 Michael Kellner has been serving as Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. In his capacity, he was also the Commissioner for small and medium-sized enterprises and Commissioner for cultural and creative industries.

Before getting elected to the German Bundestag, Michael Kellner was the green party’s Secretary General from 2013 until January 2022. During this time, he was coordinating the national election campaigns for the green party in 2017, 2021 and the German green’s European Parliament election campaign in 2019. Prior to that, he worked as political advisor to the green Member of Parliament Frithjof Schmidt and was the spokesperson of the green party’s working group on “Peace and International Affairs”. From 2004 to 2009, Michael Kellner worked as chief of staff to Claudia Roth in her capacity as co-chair of the German party Alliance 90/The Greens. His engagement with the German greens began when he became a member of the party in 1997.

Besides his positions in the Bundestag and the German government, Michael Kellner is Member of the trade union ver.di and the Heinrich Böll Foundation. He grew up in Gera in Thuringia and holds a diploma in Political Science from the University of Potsdam and also studied in Canterbury (UK) and East Lansing (USA). He lives in Berlin and in the Uckermark with his wife and two children.
